Office suites are popular types of applications used by many people. Such software is used to make presentations, reports, essays, speeches, etc. Obviously, numerous Linux users will want such software for their Linux system. Microsoft does not support Linux, so there are no Linux versions of Microsoft's Office Suite. However, here is a brief discussion on some of the available office suites for Linux.

LibreOffice

LibreOffice is a popular office suite for Linux that is free and open-source. LibreOffice supports word processing (Writer), spreadsheets (Calc), presentations (Impress), flowcharts and diagrams (Draw), databases (Base), and math equation designer (Math). LibreOffice supports Linux, Windows, OS X, and more. Many file formats are supports by LibreOffice (http://www.linux.org/threads/supported-libreoffice-files.7801/) such as Microsoft Office' formats and the file formats made by OASIS (such as *.odt files).

OpenOffice

OpenOffice (also called Apache OpenOffice) is very similar to LibreOffice and each suite module has the same name (Writer, Calc, Impress, etc.). One difference is the licensing; OpenOffice is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 while LibreOffice is licensed under the GNU LGPLv3 with new additions dual-licensed under MPL 2.0. Most of the differences between LibreOffice and OpenOffice are subtle. Most Linux distros use LibreOffice, although some people prefer OpenOffice.
