Note: Correct disk geometry is required for a successful recovery. 'Analyse'
process may give some warnings if it thinks the logical geometry is mismatched.
Looks like you're getting into it, great! Are you confortable enough to continue on your own? Just pay attention to the instructions and everything should be fine. Don't hesitate to ask if you feel stuck at some point.

def not comfortable, but down at the bottom of the screen it is highlighted on "quick search", so I should probably just hit enter?

Oh wait, isn't this your internal disk? You should be looking into this one
sdb 8:16 1 28.9G 0 disk
├─sdb1 8:17 1 2.1G 0 part /media/russell/Zorin OS 15.1 Core 64bit
└─sdb2 8:18 1 3.6M 0 part
That's your USB device, isn't it?

Answer my previous question first. And yes, just hit enter but first make sure that's the right device.

@heretical_1 Sorry, I got confused cause I thought the USB was only 2.1gb but that's the Zorin ISO, my bad, misread the whole thing. Sorry. You're good to go. Hit enter and continue.

Ok. Once testdisk finishes analysing your device you'll see a screen where you can list the files, just type P and give it a minute or two.

If it found any recoverable files you should see their names, clearly, otherwise it'll be a bunch of random symbols and unfortunately they're useless. Hopefully, yours will be recoverable.

done. I guess this means there were no recoverable files

Yeah, looks like it, so sorry man, well at least you tried and learnt something new :)

@captain-sensible
Cap,
If you would have told me when I was 20 that I would live to 85 I would have doubted your sanity!
My dad died when he was 72. My older brother died at 67. My sister died at 79. My mother died caused by a car accident at 81. I have a younger brother still alive at 84 in March, but in very poor condition - alzheimers.
When I was young it seems that I was quite sickly most of time. Never weighed 100 pounds til after high school.
I have been blessed with quite a long, full life; including a very healthy wife who will turn 85 in April.
As you can see, I have lived longer than anyone else in my immediate family. I don't know why.
However, I will take each day as it comes and try to enjoy it to the fullest - and that includes trying to learn more about Linux stuff!!! YAY!!!
