Hello, I am new to these forums and Linux (but not Unix). I need to transition from Windows 7 to Linux, but I would like to keep the Windows option for any problematic programs: I need to be able to dual-boot. My Windows disk is quite full. Would I be better to get a new, additional disk and install Linux on that OR get a much larger disk and place Linux/Windows partitions on that? I need to be able to copy data between the Linux and Windows drives (both ways) and would like to use the Linux drive for gaming.

easiest way get another drive, make it primary [ 1st connection on motherboard] ] select and install your linux to that drive, when you install the grub should recognise the windows on the other drive automatically..

Thanks for the reply. I wondered which would be more stable/better performing: 2 separate disks or 1 partitioned disk.

unless you work in nano seconds it is doubtful you will notice

You'll find separate disks easier to manage. So, that'd be my personal preference.

As brick said, it's not going to make much difference in the performance world.
