Moving from Windows, Mint was my first distro choice, but I can't stand that Linux Mint hides file extensions by default. It put me off immediately.. I understand Linux doesn't rely on extensions like Windows, but I prefer seeing them for clarity...

Seems this is a well known issue, and irritates a few users without an easy fix...?:

After trying Xubuntu, and not ever feeling the need to try anything else again. I feel confident saying Ubuntu and its derivatives still sit on the "best conversion from Windows distro" throne.

Just my opinion.

Hmm... My Mint shows file extensions. I don't recall doing anything to change that.

But, I'm also a big fan of the Ubuntu-family of distros - particularly Lubuntu.

Yeah, me too. BUT in Microsoft you still have to open File Explorer and check the box to "FIle Name Extentions"

I could be mistaken but Ubuntu is foundation for LinuxMint... admittedly less now in some of the later versions, but back in the day??

True but that is alot easier than installing and configuring a brand new file manager.. especially since Nemo (default file manager for cinnamon) handles wallpapers and launcher icons etc...

cant confirm this since I use dolphin and it seems to always show file extensions (for the files that have file extensions, anyway)

google says: Nemo file manager > "View" menu > enable "Show File Extensions" option.

What can I say... You are in a new world and it ain't MyCrowSoft. Never intended to be. With almost five decades as a IT Support person and only a bit over two months of Linux... IMHO I am damn glad it isn't.

I am glad it is hard for me to make the change. Some things are extremely difficult but it shows me two things. One, how far off Microsoft has drifted from where they started. Two, this site where there is a bunch of folks willing to help.

Just me yapping away:)

Oh boy! Google says that...? LinuxMint 22.x (Wilma), that does not exist as a Menu Selection.

I'm beginning to realize that the one main qualification for a user of any of the 500plus distros - is humor. ;) Just saying...

Where else are you going to get an OS as entertaining as this? Oooops, somebody is sure to tell me ;)

But, I'm also a big fan of the Ubuntu-family of distros

Google can be misleading.. there is a whole discussion on the issue here:
https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=218705

One interesting thing mentioned is that Linux does in fact use file extensions..

I realized this myself when I saved a bash script I was working on with my text editor and forgot to add the .txt extension. When I tried to open and view it, my system tried to execute the script... only after adding .txt extension could I view it as a text document.

Seems pretty silly to limit the user experience in such a significant way that file extensions are off limits in my opinion.

I didn't customize anything and can't even find a way to disable showing the extensions (though I did not look hard). This is from my Mint computer:

I guess I stand corrected... Which flavor/version are you running? Maybe this issue affects only nemo file manager or older versions of it?

Also, I guess it would display file extensions if they were renamed to explicity contain them.. but then is it a possibility that a jpg file could be named "picture.jpg.png" and display "picture.png"?

I'm using the latest mint 22.1 beta and it shows the extentions here also. So not sure what was different with your install. I'm using the Cinnamon DE.

Code:
  Desktop: Cinnamon v: 6.2.9 tk: GTK v: 3.24.41 wm: Muffin v: 6.2.0 vt: 7
dm: LightDM v: 1.30.0 Distro: Linux Mint 22 Wilma base: Ubuntu 24.04 nobl

I'm also scratching my head now.. I remember having the issue, and I still have the ISOs that I installed but on all the latest screenshots I can find online they do in fact have the extensions...

I'm also scratching my head now..
...it might be that it only happened in one of my installs... LMDE-6-32bit that I installed on an old vivobook is likely because it's 32bit so probably falls into context of the 2016 linuxmint.forum link I shared. But the fact that file extensions were an issue isn't likely because I only briefly had Mint installed: The HDD was corrupted and after fixing it I was eager to install Debian 32bit...

I was testing on my daily driver laptop with 21.3-XFCE-64bit, which makes less sense because it's supposed to use Thunar, which I am also using right now...???

My experience has always been that certain file-types in Linux DO always show with their extension IF such is a 'standard' part of the file-name anyway (.mp3, .mp4, .jpg. .png, .iso, .img.....etc., etc.

As for displaying/hiding "hidden" files/directories (those starting with a leading "." in their name), I think ROX-Filer must be about the simplest & most obvious. On the toolbar, there's an icon of an eye. To show 'hidden' items, click on the eye. To hide 'em again, click ROX's 'eye' once more.....

Easy-peasy.

Mike. ;)
