As a test, I have found that if I change the icon of the default start menu to the wider custom icon I have, it fits the whole icon. I did not change/adjust any size for this. What I am seeking to do is to use this icon for the Compact Menu icon instead, but the right half of it is cut off if I try it. If the default menu icon can fit the wider icon without any changes, should there not be a way to make it work for the Compact Menu as well?
or
Another option is to change the default start menu icon location to open the Compact Menu instead. Is there a way to do that?

G'day ray, welcome to Linux.org

I dont know if this will be of any help.....but worth a try.

I run Linux Mint (cinnamon)

if i right click on the menu icon, and choose 'configure', it produces the below

if I click on Menu (it shows in the above screenshot), it produces even more possibilities.....

In this last screenshot you will see there are even more choices to "open the menu editor'

Hope this expands the areas you find to look in

You right clicked on the default menu icon in its default location. I am seeking to either adjust the icon for the Compact Menu (which can be added to the panel), or, to replace the default menu icon and its location with the Compact Menu icon. Thanks.

Have you tried right clicking the Panel and clicking Panel Settings and changing it from there...

G'day @ray5450 and welcome to linux.org.

You haven't mentioned what actual distribution and version you are actually using with your MATE DE.

That might help me.

A right click on the Mate panel results in:

@ray5450 ... what about when you right-click your Menu button, if it includes an option for Preferences, then

The above is from a Linux Mint MATE I have

HTH

Wizard

The version is 21.3

A right click for Compact Menu results in these items:
Help
Edit Menu [which icons appear within the menu]
Remove
Move
Lock
--There is no option here to change its width.

A right click for the default menu, the one you posted a copy of, does not show an option to change it to open the Compact Menu instead.

Where is the 'compact menu' icon located in Mate ?

So, is it possible once you have it located in the panel, to right click it and select 'move' ?.....or similar to what this guy is doing below?

You are referring to my 2nd option. Actually, I just looked at that and I feel I am getting closer. What happened is that I tried switching their positions, but now, I cannot get either one back flush with the left corner. Moving either one stops before getting to the corner (??).

You saying that you cannot get the original menu icon and the new compact menu icon back flush with the left corner?

can you remove the original icon and then put it back after you have put the compact icon in place?...or maybe some variation of that.....perhaps put the original size icon back and see if the compact will fit alongside it or maybe even befoe it ?

Juggling time !

I found that there is some very faint separator there, so I removed it and it will go back now. However, I am back where I started...to either:
1. have the main start menu open the compact menu instead, or
2. make the compact menu icon wider.
