Experiment. What would be the minimal set up for use of a vlc player to watch youtube urls on a remote server be? A remote access viewing tool like noMachine with a minimal linuxOs for web browser? Something else?

Read here https://hobbyistsoftware.com/VLCSetup-linux and here https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1869655 while this doesn't really answer your questions, it might help to get you started. Regarding a minimal OS, you may try this https://alpinelinux.org/
I have to ask, have you considered using an OS already made for this? Something like this maybe https://libreelec.tv/ which
is "just enough OS" to run the Kodi media centre. LibreELEC is a Linux distribution built to run Kodi on current and popular hardware. The project is an evolution of the OpenELEC project. LibreELEC software will be familiar to OpenELEC users. The distribution runs on x86 desktop computers, Raspberry Pi devices and ODroid and WeTek computers.
As for using YouTube in kodi https://koditips.com/setup-use-youtube-kodi-addon/
You might want to read here too https://libreelec.wiki/

Hope this helps! :)
