I bought a used dell laptop inspiron 1501.
I installed plamo linux 5.1 64 bit, Japanese linux distribution.
While installing from dvd media, there is no problem.
When booting from hard disk, loading radeon module (modprobe radeon),
many colorful vertical lines are displayed. there is no error in syslog.
My machine boots normally once in four or five times.
kernel version is 3.11.
lspci says the VGA compatible controller is "Radeon Xpress 200M".
VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RS482 [Radeon Xpress 200M]

It seems unlikely that this could be a software/OS problem. I would check the hardware connections where possible.

If it is not too much, try a different distro to see what happens with that.

Most likely a driver problem...

Are you running a compositing window manager?
