For an unknown reason one day my current ( and good) password wasn't acknowledged by my login screen in linux mint20. If i go to the tex screen ( CTrl+ALT+f2 ) I can login that way. I\d like to get back to normal and am perplexed as to why the login screen stopped acknowledging it in order proceed to the desktop gui. HELP ! I'd really like to avoid a completer re-installation.

If it accepts your password and kinda refreshes like you never entered it, look up 'login loop' and it's usually a pretty easy fix involving permissions and Xauthority.

Or a full hard drive.

@medusa569 welcome to linux.org :)

Which Desktop Environment are you using? Cinnamon, MATE, or XFCE.

All three use LightDM as a Display Manager, but it can be implemented in different ways.

This may be an issue with your Display Manager (which controls the Login screen), and a reinstallation of the DM may remedy your problem.
