I have dabbled with Linux for several years now and while I really like it I do struggle with it, file permissions and ownership have been quite a challenge. I have a couple of systems that I barely know are Linux, a Synology NAS and I'm currently experimenting with a ZimaOS Plex Server and there is one feature of both of these that I really like, they have a 'simple' web page where I can see what is going on. The widgets for CPU, memory and network usage and the fairly rudimentary (but useful) file browser. The problem with these 'distros' is that they are locked down, both have a warning in smb.conf to 'DO NOT MODIFY' amongst other things.

I have now discovered that DietPi, which has no restrictions that I am aware of, has a dashboard which is accessible from a networked PC web browser although for some reason it locks up frequently, it may still be a beta feature!

Are there are other distros with a Web GUI dashboard like this, or a Web GUI dashboard that can be added to an existing dashboard?

I'm not knowledgeable or anything, but I use dietpi to host my pihole/dns sink and that web gui is just hosted via httpd (apache, lighthttpd, etc - there are several implementations of it available). that's all you really need, to my understanding

What do you mean with "locked down" you can modify configuration files if needed with sudo privileges even if have thave some comments like that in it. Or do you mean you are talking about ZimaOS being locked down? If so then you could look at installing a standard Linux distribution and installing a hosting panel on it, for example one of these?

I don't think I can use cron in ZimaOS and while I think you can modify configuration files, I don't know if ZimaOS has some underlying reason why they cannot be modified - so I leave them alone. Similarly Synology does things differently, I don't think passwordless ssh is 'standard' and while it may just be another Distro and the way they do things my experience is not broad enough to know so again I leave it alone.
I am at the stage where if I follow a how-to or tutorial and it doesn't work I'm up a creek without a paddle - although I have retrieved a few dead ends now.
Webmin and Virtualmin look promising, I didn't know about them. Thanks

And you can also have a look at TrueNAS since it's probably more comparable to SynologyOS, check under "Features".
True-Core is BSD-based.
True-Scale is Linux-based.

I usually install webmin which is what I think you are looking for. try it out.
