Linux on MacOS systems

Good Morning,

Has anyone installed a Linux distribution on a Mac system from an external hard drive and had it work with stability? My husband swears it can work and I am unsure about this.

M2 silicone chipset on a Mac desktop but have a separate monitor from HP.

the question should be..can you install Linux, to a mac with an M" silicon chip [whether its on the internal or on an external drive doesn't matter.] and the answer is yes, but you may need to jump through a couple of extra hoops,
