Hi all,

I'm having issues with Darktable lately up to the point that it won't export photos anymore. I always had problems with Darktable as it is for Linux but runs on Mac, but there are no updates for Monterey and the earlier versions had bugs which didn't let me to work as I should. After some time there was no options just to use what was the latest version, this, which has the aforementioned bug. It's extremely slow and now it does not export.
So, I'm thinking to use Linux instead as I don't use the laptop for anything else except basic infos from the internet and editing photos. I love Darktable so I do not want to switch to another software. As I'm totally new to this I ask the question if I can use only Linux on a Mac and wipe off osx or the two at the same time? What problems can I run and how to bridge these issues?
Thanks!

YES YES AND YES
yes you can run Linux on old Mac machinery , how difficult to set up will depend on the age and model number

can you install Linux on its own [what we call bare mettle] yes you can you run Linux alongside macOS, yes you can its called duel or multi-boot
if you have a modern mac with the ARM based CPU, you will need to use an ARM based distribution, otherwise any should do.
by using the site search facility, you will find quite a bit on Linux and macs

Addendum just noticed you have a mac book 2013 vintage, this will cause minimal installation problems search the site for installing to a MacBook

Many thanks for your response! I'll look into it and in case I've a question or more I might get back to you.

I used to run Linux alongside macOS X on my old 2011 era iMac, I believe I used rEFInd as my boot manager to accomplish this, this was many, many years ago though for what it is worth.

I used a CD to boot MX, choose option 1, connect to wifi, play a YT.
If all that work for you, hit the INSTALL, answer ‘Erase everything …’.

late to the game here but yes you can run linux on the mac. You will however likely run into a few pieces of hardware that may not function out of the box. Apple is world famous for making hardware that only works with their OS. I suggest run a live USB/CD and see what works out of the box. You will want to checkout Ubuntu and Fedora as they tend to be the best at support of hardware out of the box. Once you find a distro that does the best for you, then go ahead and pull data you need out of the computer then wipe and install the distro you found to work best.

Fedora or Ubuntu are sure NO better in support for Mac, as I have run all kinds of Linux on my own iMac 2016 for years until today. Just be sure to run the right kernel, not always the latest, and the correct drivers for your gpu…
Cheers, Eddy

let's not shoot down distros, you have no idea what will work best on that person's hardware. Best to not eliminate 2 very well supported distros because of your say so. Let them try and see, it might turn out to be the best for them. If not they will know that also, but it should be tried.

I know several distros that are considered friendly to MacBook's but at this stage the op hasn't asked for distribution suggestions, just can it be done.

Okay, so I decided to try it at first. I would install Linux on a usb drive and would run it without installing it on the Mac. As I would like to use the Darktable software I have a few questions as I watched a few videos but none of them was straightforward (it could happen that it's not even straightforward to do it) so I could not decide how to do it.
1. I have a usb drive type c so I can plug it straight, nothing's on it, totally empty, enough space. Would like to download Ubuntu for instance on it and then what? If you can send me a link to a step by step tutorial for the entire process then it would be great. I also will search on this site as I think where else can I find better suggestions than here but still it could happen that I won't find what you know it's here to successfully install and run Linux from a usb drive.
2. I would like to use Darktable on Linux. How can I do that? So after everything is set up I just download the Darktable to the usb drive and how will I install Darktable to Linux? Sorry guys I'm basic user only and everything went fine until Darktable decided not to support older Macs anymore so I need to adjust the situation.

try one of the many Linux builds that give you a "live test" from the usb,
