Makes not a jot of difference.......but I am not fussed...despite rebooting another 10K times with altered /etc/default/grub etc etc....the same problem remains

What the hell am i missing?

I just corrected the incorrect command at #57 as mentioned by you at #60

What the hell am i missing?

(Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz sings) "If I only had a brain". ;)

Top of the morning to you Brian.

Dunno - we are on page 4 and it might be a good time to summarise what issues you are (still) facing.

Do you have a Timeshift snapshot from before the updates that included the kernel upgrade?

I should be free in a few minutes to swing into Vanessa and see if kernel ...50 has ascended yet, just waiting in Arcolinux for my grub to reconfigure itself, getting near the finish.

Wiz

The problematic kernel (50) came in on 11th October...

I have a snapshot taken on 21st September where I fixed runaway logs.

I shall await your telling me/us that indeed 50 has failed to 'ascend'

All good here

Well I'll be gobsmacked !!!!!!!!!

I stand corrected .

So how is it that your pc 'ascends'....whereas mine does not ??!!

Is "resetting" grub a viable option ?

....or am I "barking up the wrong tree" yet again ?

I can always bite the bullet and just restore the bloody thing to September 21st
(mayhem will ensue with downloaded tv shows etc etc.....but I would survive.)

I changed my mirrors from .au, to the default......and the result was shown below.

I tell you the gremlins are alive and doing well.....(this was one of the "not to upgrade....via the sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
go figure.

I just ran sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade......see result below

I guess the "updates" just got a double dose !

No harm done.

??...does running the sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade command , "trigger" an Update Manager response???

Restored to 21st September

That was not for the faint hearted.

Refused to update....would not change mirrors....""Please switch to another linux mint mirror....You APT Config is Corrupted"

There had been zero change to a second kernel being available via advanced options etc on grub screen, so I restored to back to the current time etc...all good

You must be in the blessed minority then, because when I do so, I can't use it for several reboots or a day or two.
I do not understand why, when you have installed anything,...be it a kernel or any other piece of software etc etc, ...it is not immediately available. that makes no sense.

Anyhoo/......here I sit, broken hearted, etc etc etc.. ;)

I still have some thinking time for the fact that the 6 not to upgrade.....upgraded!...via both the Terminal and also via Updates.
In hindsight, that did occur after you pointed out the error in the sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade command
as KGIII would say.... hmmm

Onward and Upward.

I will strengthen my patient side (gird my loins) and sit awaiting either news from launchpad re the error reported there or a kernel update from the update manager.....whichever occurs first.

I will not hold my breathe.

Just a heads up - t'other Brian
Force of habit, Most of us know you need to sudo, unless logged in as root in Linux, [but yes get the point newbies reading this would not know.]

Just to further confound the exsperts......

I opened /home/file manager/etc/default/grub.....

and grub is not there.

No liquor involved.

I looked around....zero

I ran sudo update-grub

the result is below

brian@brian-desktop:~$ sudo update-grub

I've had liquor.

Take 3 aspirin and call me in the morning. LOL.

Waiting for you to get on a boat.

that will take too long, will just have to Waite 4 hrs till its G&T time

But seriously, folks, and back on topic - @Condobloke I am currently installing today's daily build of Lubuntu 22.10 'Kinetic Kudu' so that I can check the Timeshift problem I am working on, so I can touch base with David G. and Chris G.. so I won't be of much help until tomorrow.

Regrets.

Chris

Regrets ?...nah....none here......in the meantime, I have fixed it.

It will take me 30 minutes (more or less) to type up the events leading up to the ta da moment.

Following on from post#71......(Life got in the way !)

After seeing the results of sudo update grub etc....I rebooted.

A few seconds into the boot procedure, a sky blue grub screen appeared...(it has always been black)

I hit the down arrow to select Advanced Options for Linux Mint 21, and TA DA....two kernels listed.

Loud shouts of..."omg I am brilliant"...ensued....

I have rebooted a number of times to ensure it is not a dream and am about to run Timeshift.....and later tonight a Disk Image.

I do recall in Software sources, I clicked on Maintenance....and clicked through the first three .....Fix mergeList problems.....Purge residual configuration,,,and Remove duplicate entries
I do not think they had any effect as I have done that before.

I have proceeded to delete the Timeshift Snapshots which have non viable grubs.....

The "good grub" snapshot is in place and suitably commented on....In a short while I will go offline and take a Disc Image.

Does that mean we can put this baby to bed? ;)

Well done for persevering.
