I have upgraded my Thinkpad T480 laptop from Mint 21.3 to 22, it was a fresh install
The laptop has
Intel i5-8350U CPU- 1.70GHZ x 4
16GB DDR4 memory
Running X11 display server

Everything is running fine except 2 or 3 times a week the bottom panel shows a few horizontal jumpy lines, it doesn't appear to affect operation of the system but it is visually very annoying. I have been using a couple of different desktop themes but I've also run the built in themes too, namely Mint-L-dark blue & Mint-Y-dark blue, it doesn't matter which one I use the issue pops up every now & then so I'm guessing the issue is not with themes. The only way to stop it is to reboot the system.

Anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks

Could it be that xwayland driver not playing happily or does that only come into play if I open a wayland session ??

Try clicking on menu and typing in Driver Manager...allow it to scan

You have onboard graphics....so it probably will not make a difference.

Try changing kernel. That may have had some influence.

As expected no drivers required, I'm a little nervous changing kernels, can it do any harm if I select the wrong one?

These are what's available

Timeshift will ensure you stay in one piece. make sure you have an up to date snapshot

There are no 5.15 kernels there?.......I doubt shifting to the 6.8.0-38 will make much difference, but you can always try it.

When you reboot, the screen comes to the grub screen......tap the down arrow when that screen appears to go to advanced.....and select the other kernel.
Worth a try.
.

can it do any harm if I select the wrong one?

If it doesn't boot, reboot to safe mode (smash the F8 button over and over during the boot process) and pick 'advanced options'. Once you're in there you can boot to the original kernel and uninstall the new kernel at will.

Mint 22 is new and is going to have problems...that's why I never install a new version.

I always wait at least 3 mths...by then most problems should be fixed...hopefully.

When I install a new version...I always do it on a spare SSD just in case and I never upgrade.

Copy and paste this command in the terminal.

Code:
echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

See if it displays Wayland.

Copy and paste this command in the terminal if no output than you are not running Wayland.

Code:
env | grep -i wayland

If either shows Wayland than it's possible that there is a conflicting issue with the Intel processor graphics.

If this is a new laptop you might want to use the Edge version
which is suppose to have better driver support for newer hardware.

I don't know if Linux Mint offers a Linux Mint 22 Edge version.

From your 'specs' above it would appear you using x11

active: x11,surfaceless,device inactive: gbm,wayland

If you wish to be sure, log out on your pc......(not ren=boot or shutdown...Log Out

You will be presented with a password box to log back in with

In that same box there will be a small circle like shown below....that indicates that cinnamon default is being used.....there are two other choices.....one of then being Cinnamon Wayland

Do some click on the little circle and you will see.......just be sure that the last thing you see there highlighted is Cinnamon Default....then click the arrow on the left to return to the password box......put your password in and it will return to your desktop

I have copy & pasted the commands given by The Duck (thanks) and as expected it returns X11
Could it be something to do with the Intel UHD 620 graphics? Condobloke suggested scanning with the driver manager which didn't find any different drivers but this is all well beyond my level of knowledge.

I've logged out and it definitely has Cinnamon (Default)
Cinnamon (software rendering)
Wayland (experimental)
Ther's no doubt I'm using X11

I am not sure what the effect would be if you were to install an earlier kernel, eg 5.15.0-117

This may well stop the current problem, but what its effect may be on the rest of LM22 I have no idea.

It is quite probably that others will experience some problem with that kernel....in which case there will be updates release to take care of those problems.

Are you willing to wait it out?...or you could always use a Timeshift snapshot or image backup to go back to LM21.3

The person who opened this topic...:

Is also having problems.....his pc will not run LM22 using the 6.8 kernel, but will if he uses the 5.15 kernel

He has attracted attention over there, I will follow that topic for its outcome

Mint 22 is new and is going to have problems...that's why I never install a new version.
+1, new versions of what ever software may bring trouble.

If rolling back kernel to version that's used in Mint 21.3 doesn't fix it then I'd roll back OS.

Could it be something to do with the Intel UHD 620 graphics?
It's possible kernel and graphics driver incompatible.

Create a bootable USB flash drive of Linux Mint 21.3 and give it a test run and see if the problem exists.
