Linux Mint 18 (Sarah) compatible printers?

Hi all, I have a HP laptop running Linux Mint 18 (Sarah). Currently using a Kodak Verite 55 printer but can’t get it to scan, prints great. I’ve downloaded all the linux drivers but no luck. Is there any compatible printers that will work with my particular OS?

I see that Kodak has special scanner driver for Linux and your model... so I wonder what trouble you are having with it? I am always too cheap to buy new stuff if I can make old stuff work! :D

But, if you want a new printer/scanner, I would always recommend HP brand for Linux users (any distro). They have by far the best Linux support for their various products. However, in spite of that recommendation, you should be careful about buying the latest-greatest models which may not yet be Linux compatible, and there may be a few other unsupported devices. The driver for the scanner was only network scan and it doesn't recognize the printer. I'm going with your recommendation of an HP printer but don't know which model to go with.

There were separate drivers, one for printer and another for scanner (same model you named). I don't know about connectivity, but seems like anything that would work wireless would also work USB too. I can't be sure though. The drivers were offered as .deb files which should be fairly easy to install in Mint.

I don't know where you are... so shop around your favorite stores, big box or online, and see what model(s) you like. Then go compare your preferred model to the link I gave you above to confirm HP support. Over many years I have had excellent success with HP printers, but I don't want you to find out after a purchase that you picked something that was not supported.

You probably would not need to download HPLIP from the link above. It should be available in the Mint repositories so it would be easier to install from there. But... if you get a latest-greatest model, you may need the latest HPLIP too. That happens sometimes. The main thing is to try to be sure that it is supported for your needs (ie, USB if you can't go wireless).

OK, then... FOR EXAMPLE ONLY: HP Envy 4520 at Best Buy is on sale for $67 (3-in-1, no FAX). See here: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/hp-envy...k-ready-printer-black/4363404.p?skuId=4363404

You can look it up on HPLIP (searching the "Other" category for the Envy model). Needs HPLIP minimum version 3.15.11

The details on the HPLIP page show this printer should work fine with USB or wireless, but not parallel connections. It does not support FAX or photo cards (plugged in SD cards, I'm guessing). Alignment, head cleaning, diagnostics (and some others) are not available via HPLIP, but they may be available on the local printer controls.

You can see the HPLIP site can provide a wealth of information to help you determine if a printer you're looking at will be suitable. Good luck on your shopping!

The .run files aren't too familiar to me, but the HPLIP website says how to install their file if you download that. Those instructions are here: http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/install/install/index.html

You may already have HPLIP installed with Mint, and if so it should be up to date with their repositories (even if not the very latest to match the HPLIP website). There are several ways to tell if it is already installed, here's an easy one:

If installed, you'll see it there as well as the version number.
