Linux file sharing - how do I do it - OSX did it without a problem

I've always found setting up file sharing my linux box with my windows box to be a pain to set up.

This weekend my son sold (fix used computer business) a MacBook to my wife. Over night the OS was re-installing and this morning I just had a chance to check it out. Nobody has done anything to the Mac, it is a fresh OS install. I saw that there is a file system like the Kubuntu file manager. To my amazement I saw it was already sharing all the file system hierarchy on my windows PC.

What the heck????

I am a bit confused because Mac is based on Unix and Linux is based on Unix. One sets up file sharing without touching the keypad (Mac) and the other takes wizardry (Linux) to set up file sharing.

I've never been a Mac person but from what I see Apple has put together a slick OS.

It has given me a boast to try and set up Samba on this laptop to share with my PC. What am I doing wrong with Samba?
