It was in inodes. <df -ih> showed that the usage was 100% and hence the OS couldn't make any new indexes, I suppose. Cleared files in /var/spool/postfix/maildrop and resolved it. Thanks again.

The space issue was what stood out to me, so that's what I figured would solve it. You might want to automate cleaning and/or add disk space where possible. It seems likely to otherwise happen again.
