This may not belong here or it may not?
I was looking at buying my granddaughter a laptop to help her with her studies at University.
All the ones that I was looking at either had, DOS, Ubuntu, or just Linux installed and very few had Microsoft installed. But they never mentioned which distro was loaded just that it was Linux.
I was talking to my mate who is a manager of a small computer shop ( a branch of a larger computer shop) and he said to me that most of the laptops sold in Ukraine did not have Windows preinstalled and when you buy one and want genuine windows installed that is an extra 4,000 grivner or A$ 205 US$ 151. But I am aware also they have what I call windows dodgy version.
I had noticed this about four or five years ago because I went into one joint that sold laptops and on their tickets describing the laptop and its OS they did not refer to the OS but something else which has slipped my mind and I could clearly see it had the Ubuntu logo on the Desktop. I remarked to a sales assistant they had better up date their tickets to say which OS was loaded and it was Linux not what they described it as.
But when I looked at Newegg. com most of theirs had Vindows installed.
So here in Ukraine Linux is more likely to be installed on the laptop than windows.

i would say to the sales guy, can you show me how to open up a terminal , yep ok
lets see what happens when we type in this command :

Code:
$ cat /etc/*_release

Code:
//on mine :
[andrew@darkstar:~][1]$ cat /etc/*-release                                (10-16 19:43)

so that command should give you a clue.

Ukraine by the way sounds like Linux heaven

specs on the laptop online
I have the habit of doing so once I have four or five picked and want to winnow them down to one or two to cover the rear end should the one I choose is unavailable or have second thought when seeing it in reality.

Will you be doing gaming on your new laptop?

Ah! No as it was for my granddaughter who just started University and it is to help her with her studies.
Not really into in to gaming myself, As for Princess I don't think she is either though I may be wrong about that.

Good luck to your grand daughter!

The ONLY problem I've ever had with laptop running Linux is Wifi chipsets.
Video cards always work.
Hard drives, nmve's, ssd's, always work.
Ethernet NICs always work.
Sound cards always work.

Wifi cards, work about 2/3rds of the time.
And wifi drivers are sometimes Distro specific.
