Hi all,

I am not new to linux, but I am very far away from saying I know what I am doing. I have recently bought a new laptop and installed the latest Kali distro on to it. After booting up there is no wireless icon in the top left of the screen and I was wondering if anyone could help me on the below:

The Wireless card is a Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX201 160MHz, and driver have been downloaded from here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005511/wireless.html

Troubleshooting:
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo apt update
sudo apt autoremove

$ sudo lshw -C network
[sudo] password for chris:

It is the uncliamed bit above that I am not sure on.

[ 6.341785] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: check git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git

Driver downloaded from Intel where copied to /lib/firmware and machine rebooted. Although the new drivers did not add the network card they are not listed in the above errors.

Firmware was downloaded from this link (https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git/about/) and added to lib/firmware, but still no joy.

Following this I presumed that the network card does not have "proper" support in linux and therefore bought a TPlink AC1300 as advised on a website to be fully compatible with Kali. However I have plugged this in and now I can't see it and I am getting to the end of my rope.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

kind regards,
Chris

As you admit to being new to Linux, I am afraid to tell you that you do not have the experience or knowledge to install and run Kali

this from the official Kali introduction
"(…) Kali is a Linux distribution specifically geared towards professional penetration testers and security specialists, and given its unique nature, it is NOT a recommended distribution if you’re unfamiliar with Linux or are looking for a general-purpose Linux desktop distribution for development, web design, gaming, etc. (…)"

Sorry yes this OS is being used for pen testing a network. Just a bit of background, I have been an infrastructure engineer for 10 years, more than happy with any technical aspect / I understand how to run pen tests and the risks involved etc. I am just getting familiar with the back end of a linux OS.

I have just got the driver working for the AC1300 and I am now connected.

Can anyone tell me what the "UNCLAIMED" network means under lshw please? Does this mean that the system has the firmware for the device but no driver to use?

ok, so you should know that you cannot run windows programs and drivers directly in Linux, which is what you download [post 1]
Wi-Fi 6 AX201 drivers are in the older Linux kernel, you may have to drop back the kernel and import the intel backport files as Kali is loosely based on Ubuntu see this it may help
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1352653/intel-ax201-wi-fi-6-is-not-working-on-ubuntu-21-04

your unclaimed is probably your intel Wi-fi as it has no driver at present
there are far easier pen-testing distributions than Kali easier to install easier to fix when broken, they all use the same "tools"

edit,
thought, How have you installed Kali? Direct to Hard-drive/SSD or in a VM [if its in aVM/VB then see post #2 in this thread
https://www.linux.org/threads/kali-virtual-box-network-connection.41864/ ]
