Show Linux running on your old hardware in here. TinyCore on my AMD K6-2 testing system with 256megs of ram.

Hmmm... Why TC 13.x?

I put 15.0 on my AMD Duron system (screen shot to follow next time I fire it up) and it ran decently. I couldn't run a modern firefox on it though because the CPU doesn't support "SSE2".

I basically put the same config on it as I'm running on this more modern system with the exception of 32 bit vs 64 bit architecture (and firefox not working). The lack of a wide screen monitor makes the old box look... old.

Edit: corrected "SSE" to "SSE2"

There! I did fire that up. Specs:
  • Asus A7V mobo w/bios dated 2000-09-26
  • AMD Athlon v.6.3.1 32-bit 800 MHz 1 core 1 thread, apparently no "SSE2"
  • /proc/meminfo reports "313,380 KB" of ram. lshw says 306 MB
  • Seagate 120 GB HD
  • Teac CD-R / CD-RW
  • Nvidea Riva TNT2
  • USB 1.1 ports (ruined my USB 2.0 thumb drive!)
  • ll that in an Enlight case

Even with Tiny Core, it took2 minutes and 22 seconds from when I hit enter on the grub menu until it showed the desktop.

What's the thing right above the floppy drive in the lower right? Another HD?

Fitted Debian 2.2 on to the 386DX2 as above. Pretty straight forward installation early if you can actually read :) AND I can access The Debian archives for this and any older Debian distro versions. In fact I've even put directions to Distros 2 to three versions later in the /etc/apt/sources.list file a upgraded software to later versions without any issues....

I don't have any old hardware except my 12 year old Laptop and that's 64bit...don't see why I'd ever want to.

Oh, there's no logical REASON to at all, mate; but some of us just love messing around with "dinosaur" tech, simply to see what you CAN make it do!

The results can sometimes surprise you...

It's fun. No other reason than that. Needless to say, we usually all have functional, up-to-date systems running on much newer hardware, too. The old gear is just for a laugh.

If ye anciente Inspiron lappie hadn't given up the ghost a couple of years back, I would probably have been running TinyCore on it myself. Not much else you could go for, with only a 32-bit (400 MHz FSB) P4 and a gig-and-a-half of DDR1 RAM....even Puppy was getting to be too much for it.

Toshiba Magnia SG20... 566 MHz celeron, 32 bit, 128 MB RAM (ECC), a pair of 20 GB PATA drives. It originally had redhat on it, but I put Tiny Core and it ran fine.

Exactly!!

I run Devuan Jessie, TinyCore Linux and Slackware 14.2 on my K6-2 test system. Jessie and Slackware boot to the xfce desktop in less than a minute.....
