Recently retired and thought I would continue my learning skills. I've never tried Linux before, but I did think about giving it try a few years back though I just never could find the time to really dig in to it. So, I just wanted to be neighborly and say howdy and hope I can learn the "Linux" language without killing myself.

Welcome to the forums,
you're not the oldest newbie this year by any stretch, but you will have the same learning curve to pass through, how steep it is will be up to you, sit back chill out and learn as you go, or think you are back at collage and give yourself a stiff target, it's your choice, as long as you keep it enjoyable.

G;day j2TX, Welcome to Linux.org

I'll try to line the ducks up in a row for you....

Will you be trying Linux on a pc that already has windows on it?...or do you have a latop or another desktop etc that you can use?

In a nutshell, you can download linux....which one depends on the capabilities of the pc you use......once it is downloaded you then "burn' that file to a usb stick using balena etcher or rufus....(there are others)

Then you put the usb stick into the pc you are going to use and you Boot the pc to that usb stick.

That will open up a LIVE version of Linux.....which you can experiment with to your hearts content. Do anything with it at all....bend it, twist it, attempt to break it, etc etc etc.
If you do break it.....just pull the usb stick out and boot to it again and away you go once more......no harm done.
If there is already windows on that pc, it will do it no harm either.

It's like having a practise range.

A couple of things.....if you reboot the pc, you will have to boot it to that usb stick again.....and if you set up a browser or change a setting or whatever etc etc etc while you are playing/testing it...when you reboot or shut down all the changes you made will go kapoof....gone! .....It is better that yoiu know that, otherwise you will think you broke something beyond repair

It is a great way to learn. it gets you used to navigating your way around Linux, and you can post questions etc etc etc on here while you are doing it....so that you can put the new knowledge straight into practise as you read the answer that comes back

That should give you something to think about.

Welcome from the Piney Woods.

Just give it a try, you don't have to treat Linux like course work, start using it day to day and you will be surprised how quickly things will fall into place.

If you have a machine that will support it, start with Linux inside a virtual machine. I think you will quickly see that Linux pretty much just works, especially for day to day things like web and email.

Good luck

Welcome aboard.

Good luck retiring. I suck at it. I retired early and have since found myself obligated to do all sorts of things.

Hey you took my line. I tell people that I am retired, but I suck at it.

Not sure how I ever had time to work!

LOL I've been retired since 2007 and I've been saying it for years. So, I'm pretty sure you took my line! ;)

It's all good. You can use it too. I've been reserving my morning hours for myself. I have amassed a collection of cars (all properly stored and maintained) and I go for a drive almost every morning. I live in a very remote area that has varied weather conditions (Maine, USA) so the driving doesn't get monotonous.

That's an improvement, but I still sometimes end up doing other stuff in the mornings.

G'day @j2TX and welcome.

Enjoy your learning curve and
