It's time for a poll. How long have you used Linux?

Chill, I was just imagining, screw your condescending bs. Apple is a trillion dollar company by the way, at least in terms of their assets. If that doesn't mean anything, then I don't know what does.
It just means millions and millions love the iPhone, and then there is the iPad and a few other i thingies. Well, at one point Apple was almost broke and had to borrow quite a lot, the turnaround though shows innovation and competent management.

For starters its GNU/Linux. That being said I have been using GNU/Linux for over 8 years and it utterly dominates most other operating systems. I would like to try BSD and Plan 9 someday though. Just don't have a lot of time. I have also only ever used Arch, Manjaro, Debian, and Ubuntu. Would be nice to try Gentoo, Slackware, NixOS, Fedora, and Linux from Scratch.

That being said, I would say there is nothing wrong with using Windows 7/8. But I can not support the use of Windows 10 unless you enjoy getting sodomized Qaddafi style. "We came we saw we killed"
Oh, if you ever use Mac OSX you will be using BSD, at least partially.

Well I personally think Windows 10 and 11 are the best GNU/Linux distributions out there, all the rest of them suck balls. Microsoft is awesome and Apple too, they actually know what a good user experience is. As for free and opensource software it's a joke and shouldn't be used, proprietary software is actually good software compared to that free and opensource crap. Tux the penguin will be dead soon with the ice on the polar caps melting faster then before with the global warming and climate crisis around the world.

Thanks, Maarten, I needed that.

Tux needs to start suing the crap out of both of them so that he becomes the corporate logo for the New Century (tm)

i think we need to start imagining dystopian scenarios at that point...if everyone were using apple, then people would get pissed at the high prices (even though this takeover would drive down the prices some...), then apple would take control of the government and it would be some nightmarish form of socialism. Welcome to the Apple-States of America!

I had a friend in high school who thought that it would be good if the government made all computer parts so that there weren't all these issues with compatibility. This is never going to happen.
But, everyone isn't using Apple, especially since Micro$oft is the dominant OS, in fact Micro$oft is the largest software company in the world. Talk about dystopian, Windows is why Bill Gates was the richest person in the World for the longest period of time. Get your facts straight. Oh, so you saw one ad (1984) during Super Bowl XVIII and it scared you?
Actually, "Piracy" is why Bill Gates is one of the richest people in the world (surpassed by Musk and Bezos... and probably others). Facts... Factually fallacious fiction foreboding forum fallouts.

I do know that Micro$oft acquired many (most?) of their technologies from other companies, yes even stealing it, then getting sued, dragging it in court for years and then settling the suit by buying up the company. Basically using whatever amount of money was needed to gain control of the technology, software.

Actually, when I mentioned piracy, I was referring to Microsoft's mafia-style marketing technique, which I have to credit, is genius (even if it is evil). This actually began long before this article was printed. Comparing MS to a meth dealer would not be too far from the truth, lol.

Yeah I basically already knew this when I was a pirate-friendly Windows user...but their decision to limit acceptable hardware with windows 11 was the deal breaker.

I think it's a deal breaker even for paying customers, lol. The backlash online is insane. Top that with all these hacks surfacing, they may have to readjust their attitude like they've had to with so many other dumbass decisions they've made lately, ever since all the changes in leadership. The dependency they've created for people and companies to use their products is the only thing keeping them going... for now.

I was allowed to download an 11 iso for free since I payed for a legitimate copy of 10 off ebay several years ago...but I needed to have secure boot enabled to complete the process...I found out the hard way that it requires more than diddling with the BIOS, so I was like "you know what? I'm already pretty knowledgeable about linux so I'm just gonna quit while I'm ahead..."

Yeah, so we've gone way off topic here, but ...

You are quite right here. It's not just the spyware factor in Windows. It's also how MS requires "ownership" of your system to run. It's plain draconic, and quite ridiculous. All the security features hardware manufacturers have added to hardware, e.g. TPM, Secure Boot, hasn't created any sort of roadblock for anyone with even a modicum of knowledge. But it's there ... very present and in the face of anyone who doesn't use the hardware as they expected.

I've mentioned in the past (not here) about how hardware manufacturers are in bed with MS, and get responses like "no the hardware manufacturers just don't care about Linux." But it's evidence like this that pretty well proves the opposite, at least in my eyes.

Yet, I somehow remain in the mind that Linux isn't for everyone; that a person should use the tool best suited for them, Windows, Mac or Linux, et. al.

I'm feeling somewhat militant right now, for some unknown reason. * calm breaths *

Yeah, so we've gone way off topic here, but ...
Good point... While I enjoy chatting about the tech ecosystem, I'm out before this turns into a threadjacking...

i ain't threadjacking, i just figure that talk about windows isn't very far off topic from a general thread about operating systems...that's all i'm going to say about that:p

2022 is the year I decided to use linux as my primary OS. So, I'm new in Linux (but have some experience on server version).

I am very much new to Linux, I switched to Fedora Workstation full-time just a few days ago, after using Windows for 26 years, but I am having a great time so far!

I toyed with Ubuntu briefly back in the late 2000's, but it hardly counts because I never planned to settle back then.

@flax57, how has the experience been ?

Then you are already using the best distro for beginners
