It's time for a poll. How long have you used Linux?

it seems like people lose interest after 2 years...
I don't think that to be the case, The more likely scenario is that people find their way here when they have problems, or are newcomers, and once they have gleaned the information they need they either give up, or go on their merry way with their Linux installation never to return, [unless they foul something up],
as I type this there are only 3 of us members on line and 528 visitors [many of whom will find the answer to their questions but never join.]

No it doesn't it only shows an average of how long ago they started using Linux. Since those who have been using Linux for a longer time weren't even on this forum when they hit the 2 year mark.

i'm more or less commenting on the fact that a lot of just used it briefly then decided it wasn't for them, and based on the numbers it seems that after 2 years the interest starts to trail off. Alot of people are unknowing linux users (android users for example...)

Millions more than realise, if you have a smart kitchen appliance or a smart TV , a satellite or terrestrial decoder, even the humble DVD player, oh! and the car, they are most likely to have linux based operating systems

You would go broke very quickly with a proprietary-only mentality!

The poll isn't counting people who quit Linux after 2 years... there is no "trailing off" at all. It's only recognizing that we have a fair number of newer users here (as might be expected on a forum like this). The poll shows 54.6% of participants have been using it 5 years or more. Everyone (100%) who responded is a current Linux user... there's no option for former users to vote, nor would they be on this site anyway. ;)

can you imagine how much prices would have to increase if it were all based on the big apple

i think we need to start imagining dystopian scenarios at that point...if everyone were using apple, then people would get pissed at the high prices (even though this takeover would drive down the prices some...), then apple would take control of the government and it would be some nightmarish form of socialism. Welcome to the Apple-States of America!

I had a friend in high school who thought that it would be good if the government made all computer parts so that there weren't all these issues with compatibility. This is never going to happen.

I just want to make you aware that politics is strictly off-limits here.

It does make some things hard to discuss, but the reward is that we have a site free of politics.

This is just a friendly reminder.

I started with PCLinux 1.1 in 2007. That was the first time Microcrap really pissed me off. I built a seperate box just for Linux, at that time.

Might as well...

I'm a bit surprised nobody thought of it before I did. Or, if they did, it was well and truly buried.

Sorry I didn't mark it on my calendar, but I've been Windows free since I ordered a new laptop loaded with Ubuntu 8.04. Whenever that was?

it might have been better if it was a how long have you used *nix based OS . Since i typed code , wrote Fortran IV code and produced punched card in 1975 ; because that was well before Windows 95 , the IBM 1132 must have been Unix, in which case I must be a front runner for one of longest users of *nix
