Or even a list of 90% with notes as to what doesn't work?

I am looking to buy something today, right now, at Best Buy online with a Core i5, 8th gen or better, SSD, and works with any flavor out of the box, I am not flavor limited I just use the CLI, and the rest is a bonus, so as long as wifi, backlit keyboard, network, and graphics drivers work, I will be OK. I bought a Macbook Pro 16 4 months ago, and it does not boot any flavors, my fault for not researching the new t2 chips.

I've had good results with Dell and Acer laptops OOTB.
FWIW.

But is there "A" list, no. There may be a list somewhere for each distro - or not.

The most reliable way would be a Google search for a brand and model along with Linux as keywords. Even then, you will likely find conflicting opinions. Remember, Linux is not some big monolithic corporate thing.

Suggestion: do a search on "Win7 laptops." I came up with a listing for Walmart almost in an order the same as I would have prioritized makes -- Dell, Lenovo and others requiring further research. here.
