i was thinking about up grading from my 1gen i5 750 cpu to a i7 but will a
E.G.( 5th Gen i7 work in place of a 1gen i5)?

LOL i agree $140USD of a 5% faster cpu Not for me!
i can get a used one for $35 but you never know if it was abused and for 5% LOL Not for me!

From looking around:

Your i5 is Intel Socket 1156.

The 5th gen i7 is Intel Socket BGA 1364.

So, no...

But, at that same link, the first gen, we see a pretty decent list of options - except none of them are all that impressive compared to what you have.

only $140 just looked at my 4th gen I5 and to upgrade that to get a 10% improvement is $ 355.67
do I think it's worth it...No i dam well don't

If it were me AND I was looking to upgrade components, I'd consider looking for a mobo/cpu combo in the same price range - one that can be upgraded to a bigger/badder CPU. The board will almost certainly come with a CPU that's at least 10% better anyhow.

If it were really me, I'd just wait until I'd normally be upgrading to a newer PC.

Something like this: https://www.newegg.com/d/Special/Combo

Put 'Intel motherboards' or 'AMD motherboards' into the drop-down and sort by price or whatever. Quite a few of those will be < $355 and increase performance by more than 10%, some probably significantly more than 10%.
