Does anyone have experience with installing Ubuntu on a MSI Stealth laptop? Any information anyone could give is much appreciated. Basically, is it doable? Does secure boot need to be disabled? Is that possible? Thanks.

G'day, pcassidy, Welcome to linux.org

Give us a few more specs, please.

I am not a gamer and am therefore not familiar with a msi stealth

I can only assume at this stage that it is a "souped up" pc for the express purpose of playing games.

However....the basics should still be much the same as any other pc

it is preferable to disable secure boot. The setting will be in bios.

More details please.

I'm not a gamer either. My boss wants me to upgrade my laptop to one with a GPU in case we have to write some GPU-based software (probably either Matlab or CUDA), so I'mm looking upgrading my 10-year-old Thinkpad (which I dual boot). The new Thinkpad Carbon is an option but it has only an integrated GPU (Iris Xe) which likely has a different interface and so may not be suitable (trying to get clarification). So I'm looking at the MSI Stealth 14 Studio, which has a GeForce RTX 4050, i.e. perfectly standard NVIDIA GPU. But I don't want to be stuck with Windows. I know the Thinkpad dual boots fine. I asked the MSI help line and they never tried anything but Windows, so, not very helpful. So I'm checking to see if someone has done it before, before I throw a lot of money at it. The Oracle of All Things (ChatGPT) suggested the following problems, so I was wondering if someone had encountered and fixed them, "
  • Driver Issues: Depending on the specific hardware configuration, you may encounter more challenges with NVIDIA drivers during the installation.
  • Secure Boot: Disabling Secure Boot may not be as straightforward as on some ThinkPads."

Ok, that detail is good....Thank you

MSI Stealth 14 Studio, which has a GeForce RTX 4050 .... is your target.

I will mention a few members names here who will be able to provide further input. No action required from you

Keep in mind this an international site, so time frames vary considerably....be patient

The last MSI laptop I purchased (within the past 24 months) let me install Linux just fine. I even use secure boot and the security benefits offered by UEFI.

Welcome to the forums,
First personally I have never been a fan of Media star products, but they have improved over more recent years,
As with all "New" products, be aware that some components may not have linux drivers available as yet,
the GeForce RTX 4050, has caused some problems [distribution selective]
the other thing to watch out for is the WI-FI, you may need to download Linux drivers for it, so will need alternative means of connecting to net [Ethernet or teatherd mobile]
