Installing on external USB HDD

hi,

I have a "WD Elements 1023" external USB drive (Say mounted as asc1)

Problem is when I boot into Bionicpup I can see the drive asc1 on desktop.
Then when I try to install Bionicpup on asc1 it says there are no USB drives connected.
I go to Gparted and I can see it.

I am not sure what is happening.
I haven't tried it on other distros though but I found this behavior really puzzling.
Has anyone here come across this problem or know how to solve it.
Is this a bug?

Did you partition it to GPT and then format it to ext4 through gparted, then you might have to mount it. I just added a second ssd and I had to mount it with my fstab config.
