Installing Linux for the first time

I'm totally new to this.
I have a Dell Vostro 1700 with an SSD. I would like to install Linux on it, I was suggested KDE and Ubuntu but neither installed all the way, both crashed during install. What can I do. Both were installed from DVD disks.

Could be the disks. Do they work in another computer?

When you say KDE or Ubuntu, do you mean Kubuntu or Ubuntu?

For the laptop try Googling with the first words: linux laptop i.e. "linux laptop Dell Vostro 1700."
