Hello,

Graphic card:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tahiti XT [Radeon HD 7970/8970 OEM / R9 280X] [1002:6798]

I got this error message when i tried to install ATI drivers on Debian stretch 9.4 i already know that the AMD official drivers are outdated because i get this error message.

=====================================================================
AMD Proprietary Driver Installer/Packager
=====================================================================

error: Detected X Server version 'XServer 1.19.2_64a' is not supported. Supported versions are X.Org 6.9 or later, up to XServer 1.10 (default:v2:x86_64:lib:XServer 1.19.2_64a:none:4.9.0-6-amd64:)
Installation will not proceed.

My question is what should i do to get my ATI drivers to work again?

1. Is it possible to downgrade Xorg on Debian stretch 9.4?
2. Will amd-gpu pro drivers work?
3. should i install debian 8 jessie instead?

please help me i really don't want to go back too Debian 8 again. Sorry for this noob question i would be glad if someone helps me :)

okey so i found one solution i added on sources.list this package deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free just changed the name to from jessie to stretch main contrib non-free and found some good ati-driver working and afterwards i just had to apt-get install firmware-linux-nonfree and then reboot :)

If any has a better driver please show me :)

my info:

vblank_mode=0 glxgearsATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
28778 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5755.568 FPS
29401 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5880.034 FPS
29379 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5875.684 FPS
28969 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5793.682 FPS
28464 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5692.626 FPS
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0"

Is this good?

5755 frames per second? Good?
I'm lucky to get over 60fps from glxgears on either of the crappy graphics cards on my current laptop! (intel/nvidia optimus system)

You're getting nearly 100 times that, so I'd say it's pretty damn good!

ah sorry to hear that wow than i can be lucky on debian 8 i got around 3000 fps if i remember right which was weird because back than i used the official drivers from their homepage and now with unofficial drivers my ati is working better than the official ATI drivers. It also depends on the coders behind the driver some are really bad made i think and i also use desktop so its big difference. But i really miss the ATI control-panel would be cool too have it back again maybe someone knows how to get the control-panel to work with unoffical ati drivers or if their is something similar GUI made for firmware-linux-nonfree.
