* I edited the name of this thread to reflect what I'm actually doing now.

I'm installing LMDE 6 'Faye' in a vm, Oracle Virtual Box. Jump to this post to see where I'm at now.

Stuck Unpacking Minty icons

Is there such a thing as LMDE FIVE?

I'm looking for something to put in a vm that doesn't 'use' Wayland technology. I'm not sure I stated it correctly, but there appears to be some sort of conflict resulting from the adoption of Wayland in lieu of X11. From what I've read, LMDE 6 has begun experimental support for Wayland.

I see a lot of previous releases of LM built on Ubuntu, but only LMDE 6.

Security?

Some of my reasons are because I'm looking for a solution for a problem. Part of this is to try new things also. But I don't want to create problems for myself. If I had a spare machine I would throw caution to the wind. I don't!

If I were using LMDE 6, what are the odds of issues developing as a result of the new adoption of Wayland?
I've read in several places around the internet of people having issues with apps functioning properly because of the Wayland/X11 thing.

LMDE 5 reached it's end of life back in Sept. of 2024.

Try Linux distro's that have the XFCE, LXDE and LXQT desktop environments.

Gnome didn't work at all for me under Debian 12 using Wayland.

You can also disable Wayland by finding the configuration file and edit the string in the file to false.

As far as I know, Cinnamon 6.0 also runs on wayland

In linux Mint 22.1....if you wish to be sure you are running on x11, click on menu...Log Out

At the screen which then shows...choose/Highlight x11 (or wayland) and log back in

I've just got to reboot and run a Timeshift on an LM 21.1 'Vera' Cinnamon I have just updated, and then I'll swing into my LMDE 6 'Faye' and take a look around and be back.

I read that 'Faye' is using Wayland.

I'm installing LM XFCE. I'm stuck in the virtual machine. The sign said to press control right to get out of full screen mode. It's not working ...

Can someone please help me get out of here?

OK, so at 'Faye's login, if you click the icon of the mountain

you get a choice, and my default chosen is as follows

So you just ignore the Wayland one.

When you get provided with these choices (and many distros do so, it might be a cog instead of a mountain icon), they act as a toggle switch.

What you choose will remain as the default unless or until you change it.

I'm stuck in my virtual machine.

Hold down the [cntrl] key on the right side. (You also have one on the left side, it won't work).

So it's worked?

I feel like that problem child right now, the one that's getting into some kind trouble because she can't leave things alone..

"I wonder what would happen if I...."
