Insalling Ubuntu onto an old mac

Hiya,
I'm having issues installing ubuntu onto an old mac using 10.4.11 and I am trying to install Ubuntu 16.04.4 onto it. I've flashed the iso onto a usb drive and whenever I access the boot menu it shows only the hard drive currently in the mac and doesn't allow me to boot from the usb. Any way of working around this. I can provide images of it if needed
