I've tried livebooting my HP Omen 15" 2020 Laptop (Ryzen 5900HX + AMD integrated + Nvidia RTX 3060) from both the live USB stick as well as installing it to a HDD partition.

Using latest Debian / Kali Live + all tools distro 2022.1 rolling.

After the GUI boots, it restarts back to the boot screen. Same thing happens when I try to boot into recovery mode - there's a kernel panic - only thing I can get to is GRUB bootloader, and I imagine that's where i'll need to configure to get this thing to boot.

/boot is on ext2 partition, using UEFI

/ is on encrypted partition.

I've attached images and text of the:

  1. Missing free firmware notification at install (I heard this can be installed later)
  2. AHCI errors at boot
  3. Kernel panic that happens at recovery boot (which allows text output as modules are loaded).
I'm wondering if this is a driver thing, I'm just not sure what to turn off or blacklist from GRUB - if I could just get it to boot I could probably install some new drivers and fix configurations, I assume?

I'm a bit rusty with Linux and would really appreciate any help with troubleshooting.

I've attached screenshots of the errors I could see, as well as tried to convert it to OCR and pasted the text below:

Recover boot kernel panic (probably better to look at screenshot, the OCR seems a bit wonky here):

G'day rainclue, Welcome to Linux.org

Enough errors up there ^^^ to choke a horse.

Have you attempted to live boot a bog standard iso of Linux Mint 20.3 ?

Thanks for the reply - I can certainly flash a different distro to liveboot - but I am trying to cut my teeth and would love to learn the best way to methodically learn how to troubleshoot! Could you tell me where you would start? Is there a way to dynamically load modules / drivers one-by-one to see where it's pooping out?

As I said, it does boot to the GUI, but then immediately restarts. I saw someone on Reddit with a similar problem (on a similar computer), and they said it seemed to be the graphics driver...

Kali is not meant for new people. You will get frustrated and quit long before you learn to use Kali.

Learn to use Linux and then try Kali - is the standard advice for everyone and no you're not special. Trust us when we say learn Linux and then learn the tools Kali offers. You can use Kali's tools on any distro, as well.

Yes, I totally agree with you. I've gotten Ubuntu and CentOS to work on my old laptop, no problem at all. I've use CLI tools and also compiled some plugins for graphic software on Linux as well. I'm actually not into pentesting and I don't have any kind of hacker aspirations.

The reason I am doing this is because I truly want to learn the best way to troubleshoot unsupported HW or esoteric distros. This boot image was given to me to put on a friends laptop and I'm just noodling with it as a weekend project.

I'm more looking for advice on screening module loading / process of elimination pre-boot than getting Kali going. Happy to do that with a completely different distro, it doesn't have to be Kali - so if anyone has advice on a good way to level up with that process, I am all ears.
