Huh... There's a new version of SpinRite...

I just had time to watch this video:

I just learned that there's a new version of SpinRite - after like 20 years. I do believe my license is a lifetime license, but it'll take me longer to dig that out than it will to just buy a new license.

I'm not sure that I agree with him 100% but the dude in the video is pretty darned smart. I may buy a new license just to toy with it. I do have older magnetic storage (external drives) that have less important data on them. I suppose those could be retouched and revamped. Though, I'd not need the new version to do that. The older version will work just fine.

But, the bit about it working on an SSD has my interest piqued. I have some SSDs laying about that don't get powered on at all. They contain less important data but I guess this could increase longevity as they're older drives. If you watch the video until the end, you'll hear a bit about how it's not really needed on newer SSDs (assuming they get power regularly) and that just using TRIM is likely good enough.

But, if you have some magnetic storage hanging about this might be something you're interested in. Remember, it takes just a photon to flip a bit.

Interesting. Never actually used it myself. Actually I never used any HDD maintenance tools aside from defrag -- until I learned that there were cons to this -- and that is only at filesystem, not hardware level. Dunno where I stand on SSDs as you want to avoid as many IOPs as possible so far as I've been told.

That's why I used to back my stuff up to DVD, lol. I had one of those 200-disc "pouches" (almost the size of a laptop bag), and I filled it about 3/4 before I started using a secondary HDD for important stuff and multiple flshdrives for critical stuff... Then, about a year ago, I gave into cloud. My data is encrypted by me first, I don't fully trust "client-sde" encryption claims unless I'm the one doing it. And I'll admit, it is useful for work-related stuff to be able to access anywhere. /off-topic.

I actually may still have my 500GB enternal HDD back in Durban at my aunt's place. Bought it around 2009, so I'd be curious to see what state the data is in, lol.

Wow I haven't heard that SpinRite since my days of using Windows XP.
It was good hard drive software back in them days couldn't tell you anything about it nowadays.

That's not as important these days - unless you're making a ton of them. There's a limit to the read/write operations but that limit is pretty huge - much longer than one is likely to own the device and use the device.

Yeah, it's old software from the early 90s, maybe even the late 80s. This is the first new version in a long time.

Oh, boy.....Gibson Research Corp. Christ. Haven't heard of them for simply yonks. These are the same folks who, if you run Puppy through ShieldsUp!, will tell you that "our Pup" is completely invisible...!!

Though, I'm never too sure of the relevance of running a Windows-centric test on Linux.....

It really isn't Windows-centric if you check the tools and what they do. Watch the video for some more information as he goes into what the tools do.

Ah, no; I think we've got crossed wires here. If you look at my post again, you'll see I was referring to "ShieldsUp!"......the other product for which Gibson Research were always well-known (the on-line firewall test they provide). I have heard of SpinRite many times over the years, but I've never availed myself of it....

I agree with you that anything specifically for hardware - as opposed to software - should work equally well for a Linux user.

It's all good... I did almost post this in off-topic, but I decided it fit here better.

I've also derailed my share of threads. If they get too bad we can just wait for Wiz and he'll clean up after us!
