How Upgrade Linux Mint for First Time in Years

Okay, your disk use is on the high end (14 GB left on the system, that includes /home). But what your problem looks like is memory. You have only 2GB memory and are using swap. I am assuming this is your system idle, in which case 1GB is already in use. Another 800MB of 2GB in swap, which is a file on your system instead of on a partition.

Upon rereading the whole thread, I have to say I agree with fanboi

In a nutshell, buy another computer/laptop for the near future

At least then you will have something that will handle a modern Linux Distro.

Finish installing the updates etc so that you can at least take care of your outstanding work etc
