To play CSGO after the release of CS2 on Windows, you just need to select the csgo_legacy beta version, and also maybe change the server and client version in the steam.inf file. But on Linux, doing that sill just launches CS2.

First of all, even after selecting the csgo beta, I had to download 70 GB of data, which probably included CS2 and CSGO. But even after that, I can't launch CSGO. It just launches CS2. And I did change the server and client versions in the inf file.

Upon this reddit thread, it seems like CSGO branch on Linux is broken. I tried to do as the second comment says, but I am not able to select the Steam Linux Runtime compatibility for any game (even CS2) for some reason. And I did add the "MANGOHUD=1 %command% -steam" launch parameter, but that didn't work either.

Can't believe the cracked version of CSGO (I don't know why this exists because CS is free) on freelinuxgames actually launches than the official one, but it crashes when loading any map.

Cracked version launches because otherwise it can't install malware on your PC.
Then is crashes because crack author doesn't care game is playable, only that it executes which is minimum required to do what they want.

Here is what Valve team says:
Regardless of personal preferences regarding the current state of Counter-Strike, CS2 is the path forward. With great room for improvement, it only makes sense for Valve to channel their efforts into enhancing the new iteration, leaving behind the legacy CS:GO edition. Moreover, according to Steam's FAQ regarding the CS:GO Legacy version:

After January 1, 2024, the game will remain accessible, but certain features that depend on compatibility with the Game Coordinator (such as inventory access) may deteriorate or cease to function.

Holding onto hope for the legacy version is unwise, given support ends on January 1, 2024.

Therefore you're encouraged to play CS2 because Valve does not provide any updates or compatibility layers for legacy version.
