Hey there @shipthepilot - welcome to!

What type of applications are you planning on running? As a rule of thumb, Linux should require less memory than Windows* to operate, but it comes down to the applications you'll be using most of the time.. if you're just browsing the web, etc.. you should be fine. If you're editing images, videos, etc.. maybe not :)

Hey shipthepiolet,

Welcome to

I agree with Rob that it does depend on the applications you are wanting to run / use.

IMO to have an enjoyable 1st experience using Ubuntu 18.04 LTS or any Linux I would highly recommend at least 4.0 GB of memory.

From my experience trying to run Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with only 2.0 GB memory will be painful at best.

Ubuntu System Requirements.

Another point to consider is Ubuntu 18.04 LTS uses Gnome 3 desktop and that alone requires lots of memory resources.

With only 2.0 GB of memory I would try Lubuntu 18.04 LTS.

thx! And also what would be the best distro for 2GB of ram
Hi @shipthepilot, and welcome! @poorguy's recommendation of Lubuntu is a good choice. I'd also try out Linux Lite, LXLE, and Peppermint OS for comparisons. Which is "best" is something you have to decide... which one plays better on your hardware... which one has a more comfortable "look and feel" for your operating tastes. We can't judge those things for you.

But if you don't like any of those, or if none play well on your hardware, then we can try to determine if you have any technical problems to overcome. And there are others that we can suggest if you want to experience even more variety.
