I've used Linux AVs a couple of times over the years. Quite frankly they are a waste of CPU cycles.
The best approach to malware is to keep your OS and applications updated as often as your distro offers the updates. Then use a decent, configurable browser to take care of most internet badness. Finally, use good sense: don't ever blindly click on links in emails - if you don't know the sender, or if you hover over the link including the sender's address and it shows something weird don't click it. Always use your own known URLs to get to banking and financial sites.
Just be smart, be curious, be a skeptic.
