Sometimes my wife has multiple windows open and maybe 250 tabs open on some of the windows. I come into the room to use the computer and theres a video or audio playing. How do I find the tab that is playing? I can't go look at 250 tabs. Is there a command or other trick to bring the offending tab to the front of the class?

This may be useful if you run firefox that is similar to the one used here which is a direct download from mozilla. There is a symbol "v" in the top right hand corner which can be clicked to reveal a "Search Tabs" menu item that can be clicked to bring up a search box in which the user can enter terms to look for a particular tab. I'm not sure how well it would go with 250 open tabs unless the user had a good search term for the music that is playing on one of the tabs :)

search term.......probably youtube ....? ....you wife's habits will tell you if this is accurate or otherwise

( 250 tabs !!??....did you count them ?)

Many browsers also have vertical tabs which let's you scroll them from top to bottom and it also shows tab's full name, in Firefox this is called Firefox View and is accessible from top left corner of a browser.

From there you can filter recently opened tabs.
Other tabs should be sleeping.

Chrome/Chromium will change the faveicon to show which tab(s) are playing audio or video.

You could try closing the browser and re-opening it.
That could understandably incur the wrath of wifey. !!
There's no reason to have that many open tabs.
if wifey wants/needs 250 open tabs....so be it !!

How about just turning the volume down....?....strike a compromise ?

Happy wife...Happy life.

This thread is one reason why my wife and I (and our son) have separate computers.

Yup. The missus has her own devices. She uses Lubuntu on her desktop and laptop (but has an Apple tablet). She's proficient enough to not need my assistance.

no guarantees this will work.

OR

Solution: I have discovered that it is possible to detect which tab is playing audio through the Firefox Task Manager which is in fact a resource manager/tracker.

Open the following url in your browser: about:performance

On the right there should be three columns: Type : Energy Impact : Memory Select the energy column.

The tab playing the audio should be somewhere at the top of the list. Double-click on the link for that tab and it will open in the browser and you can 'adjust' the audio.

One question here... How much Internet data would those 200+ open browser tabs use?

Not a lot. They're usually only loaded once.

Unless mitigation steps are taken, they will eat a ton of RAM.

I was thinking that too. Their computer must have a lot of memory.

You can use an extension to automatically unload tabs from memory. They still exist as tabs but they are unloaded - meaning you'll load them again when you open that tab. These days, you can do that with Google Chrome without an extension.

It appears Firefox also supports this:

I am not surprised. There's a subset of users who have many tabs open. I am one of them but I keep it down around 100 to 125. I don't like bookmarks much, so it works for me. Even though it's native in at least Chrome, I use an extension called "Auto Tab Discard".
