Usually the VM uses the hosts internet connection and can not access the wifi directly.
First it would be helpful to know which VM software your using? Virtual Box VM ware, ETC.

Your vm is already using a virtual network interface so it has a working network connection, why do you want to connect to the wifi?

In Virtualbox you can not connect via your host's wifi adaptor. You will need to get a USB wifi stick that is not used by the host machine. Then it's still iffy if it will connect in the VM. In any event you need to install the extension pack. In order to get it working the you will need to capture the USB wifi dongle in Virtualbox using Bridge. This Thread on VB.org may be of help to you.
