It has most likely change but the original post was in 2022, So your looking at a very old post.
I use KDE most of the time now and to change the user avatar you go thought system settings on this DE.
I reckon you're right, Bob. My own avatar IS a GIF file.....but it's only showing the very first frame. I uploaded a GIF, and it's animated in the setup dialog.....but on the actual page, it's static.I don't think the Forum allows animated avatars...I tried some time ago but it wouldn't let me.
@wizardfromoz :- Why IS that, Chris.....any ideas? Even the budget-basic phpBB forum software we use for the Puppy Forums is advanced enough to allow setting a URL-linked GIF as an avatar.
I'm extremely surprised XenForo doesn't allow it. Ah. A thought....
@bob466 :- I think the animated avatar business is probably linked to specific plugins, Bob... No plugin.....no workee! AND - I hadn't noticed this - it doesn't appear to allow linking from an image-hosting site. If you want your own, it HAS to be an actual file upload.
(Coo, THAT'S old-fashioned. Last forum I joined that was still like that must have been nearly 9 years ago....)
Either that, or it's a conscious decision by Admin NOT to allow them; I know some people reckon animated avatars are distracting. Just a guess, but I'm probably not so far off the truth..?

If you are talking about the forum avatar then you go to you user name upper right click on it and select account details then Avatar, Mike is correct it will not show animated Avatars. It may allow the picture but will not show action.

They also take up bandwidth,
we are a help forum, not social media, do we need anything other than recognisable picture for our avatars
I've seen a bit of complaints from forum members (other forums) of animated gifs for avatars. Some of them can be obnoxious.
I had an animated avatar on another Forum...had it for several years...then 5 morons complained about it...but it was within the rules and a moderator told them so.
For me the damage was done and I have not been back for years...some people just don't like others who like to be different.

Heh. No I can't agree with that, I'm afraid. It's the kind of 'bog-standard' answer I would fully expect to see trotted-out in response to this sort of subject matter.....though, for uploaded content it's perfectly valid, I won't deny that....which is why I always link to an image-hosting site for anything like that. All this site will ever 'see' is a simple hyper-link; the image is actually "playing" on the hosting site, despite that you're seeing it here.
I really wouldn't have pegged YOU as the type to complain about such things, mate. Brits are usually more laid-back than that..!

In response to @ron.alan , I'll agree with him; I, too, have seen some dreadful GIFs being used as avatars. But nobody's going to tell me my sweet li'l Lab puppy is going to offend anyone; the only movement is her ears, gently flapping in the breeze from the floor-mounted heater vent! And you have to look quite closely to notice 'em...
Still, I agree with Bob; many people seem to intensely dislike anyone who dares to be just the tiniest bit 'different' to the crowd. Why, heaven above knows; do we all WANT to be sheep? There again, many only feel comfortable AS a component of 'the herd', never standing-out, never doing anything to draw the slightest bit of attention to themselves....what a boring, utterly predictable life.
Y'know, as I get older, so I steadily care less..! I don't WANT to be "predictable"...

It may be minimal but it does use bandwidth [think if every member used one! ], also for those still on slow internet/dial up/mobile, they can cause stutter and delay in loading the page
Hm. Slow internet is, fortunately, one thing I've never yet experienced. I wasn't online during much of the dial-up era, and really only began to spend a lot of time there around the time that broadband started to appear. Does 'dial-up' actually still exist..?
The anciente Inspiron was slow loading web-pages, etc, but it wasn't just t'internet.....that thing was slow, no matter WHAT it was doing. What d'you expect from an early P4 and DDR1?
(And of course, it had to be "NetBurst", didn't it? The generation that fit the Alice in Wonderland cliche to a tee...."running as fast as you possibly can, just to stand still". Super high frequency.....and not a lot happening!)

my first modem was 14.4,kbit/s[ circa 1986] then I got a 56k modem [circa 1992] which I hacked and had it running at 98k, [the isp never picked it up in those days so never cut it back] we didn't even dream of ever seeing a gb connection
According to a quick search on DDG, there were still about 375,000 people using dial-up internet services in the U.S. in 2021. And I saw the exact same number for the year 2023.
Blimey.
I know in terms of total population, that's a miniscule percentage.....but 375,000 is still a LOT of people, I don't care how you look at it.
Still, due in large part to terrain/location/circumstances, I suppose there will always be a small percentage of folks that are essentially "off the grid"......and who will always seem to fall through the cracks whenever some big new tech "upgrade" is in progress.
That's life, I guess.

I find it extremely hard to believe since the phones...computers and modems for dial up no longer exist and haven't for years.
I've never had dial up...my first computer came with cable 20MB download speed but was more like 4/6MB...no one here has dial up...it's all fibre. If I rang my ISP and asked for dial up they'd just laugh and hang up.
