Green and Blue Triangles of Death?

On two occasions, both of which occurred while I was installing something, my desktop environment got erased and replaced with a phenomenon that I can only describe as "The Green and Blue Triangles of Death", accompanied by the time and date being prominently displayed in the center of the screen. From here, I am unable to find my way back to the desktop and have to reboot. WTF is going on and how do I fix it?

um. Which distribution? Its probably a screensaver...or the Gnome login.

I checked her profile Ryan I'm guessing but seems to be into Fedora and Scientific Linux.
