Google purging ad-blocking extension uBlock Origin from Chrome Web Store Migration from Manifest V2 extensions is speeding up Oct.14, 2024

Mozilla, the privacy champion has sold himself to Google.

Mozilla, the privacy champion has sold himself to Google.
thats no different to Linux foundation taking a BIG donation from Microsoft every year, Mozilla and Linux foundation are both trust

People don't create a business on ethics reasons they create a business to make money and Google has money.

If I had a business and Google offered me a big pile of money for part of it I'd take it as I'd be a fool not to.

Google owns quite a lot of the cyber world and what Google doesn't own Google controls.

Why worry or be concerned about something you have no control over.

If Google is involved with anything to do with WWW Google is collecting user data.

I did a Google online course on S.E.O. and digital skills but for free, I had a website and I was pretty much forced to use Google Analytics and other Google tools. Google has a monopoly on too many things and I think this monopoly should be broken, if the antitrust works.

" Updated Mozilla has renewed its lucrative nine-figure deal with Google to ensure its search engine is the default in Firefox in the US and other parts of the world. "
LMFAO coz either:
  • I've been copy+pasting my .mozilla config dir into each new install for way too long.
  • Debian patches that.
because never once have I had Google as default.
Of note: if Mozilla ever did kick up a fuss, Debian would just go back to naming its builds Iceweasel, lol.

The day FireFox drops anti-pub extensions i just need to drop FireFox and find another niche.

The Firefox browser that I am presently using, Firefox 115.12.0esr, does allow for manually adding your own add-ons or extensions. You will need to find the relevant file in your directory space and make a copy of it. Then you can add it back into any installation of Firefox. Look in ~/.mozilla/firefox/%s/extensions/ where %s is found in ~/.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini under the label Path under the header [Profile0]. The uBlock origin file is named [email protected]. Copy this file somewhere safe and tell Firefox to add it to your list of add-ons. You can do this by clicking on the three horizontal lines at the top right corner of the browser window and then clicking on the Settings menu option. Then click on the Extensions & Themes menu option at the bottom left corner of the browser window. Then click on the gear icon to the right of Manage Your Extensions below the text box that says Find more add-ons Search addons.mozilla.org. This is in the Add-ons Manager browser tab. This will open a pop-up menu that shows a list of menu options. Click on the Install Add-on From File... menu option. This will cause a file browsing window to open allowing you to specify which file you would like to use to add your own browser extension to Firefox. I do hope this information is helpful to everyone. Please let me know if you have any additional questions about this. I added the HTTPS Everywhere Firefox browser extension this way to one of my copies of Firefox after the Electronic Freedom Foundation pulled it from Mozilla's add-on store because they believed that Mozilla's privacy policy wasn't good enough.

Of Note: NoScript, while not nearly as granular as uBlock, does offer "pretty good" blocking. I stopped using uBlock out of sheer laziness. Been of NoScript for a some years (3 or 4 minus 1 year spent in a commune in the bush) and I never see adds and can get through most js-based paywalls (BTW, you can use links, wget, or internet archive on those things, too*)

*Skipping paywalls and depriving people who write articles with AI of their hard-earned cash.... Tsk, tsk...
Number of people who'd give a fook = number of people who purchased a legit copy of Winrar

This may cause a major change of perspective:

Youtube's war on Adblock got worse (2024-Sep-22)
« ad blockers violate YouTube's terms of service » (1m50s)

Which means even if we can install an ad blocker a website as YouTube may require to be added on an exceptions list or there won't be a video... It seems to have happened weeks ago then i most probably forgot all about it. Yet i find it particularily odd coming from abuse professionals equiped with fancy troll tricks, like when a poster is the only guy to see his text on-line after it was erased silently, and/or standing alone in what i call a red fish tank. In short, YT has turned increasingly toxic, perhaps gambling that such treatment will cause members to come for more and continue to click like there's no tomorrow. Ah and the AI-based search engine, oh my! Built to crank us up with frustration, so it's no wonder ad blocking became popular while this sort of Halloween monster gained power, from its members: imagine, it's all virtual!

Invidious (which is what I use) has been blocked for weeks now. I'm just using yt-dlp to watch videos.

Got a better idea.... boycott google and youtube and let them know you do not approve.

Been using yt-dlp myself for years (switched to Python pip version recently). IDK if it's the change to AV1 but from 2-3 months ago -f18 (360p video + opus audio) no longer works, so it's big file sizes or a dl script to download -f140 (m4a, opus) + preferred video format, mkvmerge, delete original files.
I seldom watch stuff direct on YT. Ads aside, their UI is terrible, esp. if you've been using mpv for as long as you can remember. And ofc, I will not be part of their "spy-gorithm".

I must be a slave to the mouse! The FF extension 'Video DownloadHelper' has been useful before and in case of failure there's still screen recorders like 'VokoScreenNG', as a last resort. But i still need to scan thru a video before investing further resources on a complete transfer. Thanks for the inputs anyway, those boycott times may come.
