Good morning. I am completely new to Linux and upon restarting the computer, the above message appeared. I have tried to Google a solution for the above, but only found previous versions. I have also tried YouTube, but with the same results. Although I have tried some of these methods from Google and YouTube, it didn't solve the problem. As I am extremely curious to learn Linux, I need to get pass the grub> screen. Looking forward to your response.

G'day Ponkie, Welcome to Linux.org

Tell us a little more....which Linux are you running/trying to run?

Has it already booted properly before this

Do you have any idea what happened...power failure> etc etc

DO you have any usb sticks plugged in at the moment ?

Linux Mint Cinnamon.

Yes, everything looked fine until I ran the device updates.

I didn't experience anything like that.

No. Once installed, I removed the usb and restarted the laptop. When it booted up, that's the message I got.

Are you dual booting with windows ar another Linux ?

Do mean driver updates?.....which Linux are you using??

What did you do to run device updates ?.....what does that mean?

No . . . I deleted Windows from the laptop. Only installed Mint Cinnamon.

I did the Driver Manager and Update Manager. Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon

I uninstall and reinstall Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon just now. After taking out the usb and restarting the laptop, the first error I got was error: prohibited by secure boot policy. Then 4 error: command failed. The next error message: error: you need to load the kernel first. Press any key to continue . . . Then the message Failed to boot both default and fallback entries. Press any key to continue . . .

You need to boot into bios and disable Secure Boot....also Fast Boot/fast startup

When it boots......you will be in Live Mode.....

On the desktop there will be an icon called..."Install Linux Mint"

Double click on that and proceed....it should ask if you wish to install codecs etc ....tick yes

Choose to use the wj=hole disc, easing whatever is left on it......the installer will take care of that and any partitioning necessary.

When it finished, it will ask if you wish to continue testing or finalise the install. It is a good idea at this stage to make sure that Internet and sound are working.

It is late here, I will be missing for the next 8 hours....there will be other people here (time differences around the world)

good luck

Thank you for your assistance thus far. Much appreciated.

Any luck ?

Any luck ?
Thank you for asking. I've moved back to Windows on that laptop . . . against my will.
I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 22 on an Acer computer and had absolutely no problems with the installation.
Can you please give me links or guides to read / watch to inform myself before attempting to install Linux on the Dell laptop? I did read a couple of websites and watch some YouTube videos before the installation on both machines but don't understand why I had no issues with the Acer but got the glitches on the Dell.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Regards.

First.....make sure that the downloaded .iso file that you have, is not corrupted
READ: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.readthedocs.io/en/latest/verify.html
There is a simple way to make sure it is ok/verified....download it via a torrent. Torrent clients (like qbittorrent etc etc) actually automatically check downloads for malware/corruption etc. I download the .iso's I use in this way

before I go on....tell me exactly where you got up to in your last attempt on the Dell
1. Did you get it to boot into the "live" version ?

Follow on from there.....you didnt get that far?..........or you got that far, but could not do the actual installation ?

Be as precise as you can, please

I did a new install and had no issues until I did the Update Manager. After restarting the laptop, it went straight to the GNU GRUB version 2.12 screen.
Before reinstalling Linux back on the laptop, I want to first look into the BIOS function because before the initial installation, I watched a video on YouTube of someone changing settings in there which I think might to look at first.

I do apologise. I thought I typed the bios settings requirements into your thread/post......but it must have been another post somewhere else on the site here.

Yes, go into bios, and Disable Secure Boot. Also disable Fast Boot....(some call it fast start)

Then try again

Thank you for the information. I opened the BIOS but as I am not computer savvy, I had no idea where to look for this. Once again, I went to YouTube but their BIOS screen looked completely different to mine, and left it at that.

I am not familiar with dell laptops.....

But......the place for Secure Boot will likely be under Security

What is the model number of the Dell ?
