When you are having problems booting your computer and your working on it.
DO NOT set your only bootable usb on the box that has a 40w 32mm exciter!
:(

About a month ago i noticed my 2t hard drive was almost full and the computer was getting slower and slower... on boot and in use.
i started with a timeshift. That did nothing to help. Then i moved all my video to a external HDD and deleted from the computer ordered new ram and flowed up with anther timeshift.
Thats when i started to need the boot USB:rolleyes:
My video file shows its empty but [Disks] shows no more space and [system monitor] is telling me that two of my CPU cores are running at 100%+- the others at 20%+- .
Did a s.m.a.r.t. on the drive and it tested ok.
Then i got the RAM and started playing with it and it got worse!
The usb sitting on a big magnet for 18+-hr did not help.
i did get the computer booted BUT it took about 45min and now it sees my 2t SATA as IDE!?!? o_O
LOL time to do 41 updates.

Some clearing partitions and formatting, and a nice clean install, might just be in your future!

I'm not even gonna speculate on a fix for that.

How many kernels are installed? run
Code:
dpkg --list | grep linux-image
if you have more then a couple try removing the old ones this will free up space in your swap

Thank you all! i started this thread to vent some frustration. LOL

LOL Nope its in my past. After five trips to school to get on line. 4hrs of looking for a solution to the newest problem. (login, black........) the fix i found did not work. then i grabbed one of my HDD clones. You know what if you clone a $hit HDD you get anther one like it
Well back to school and made a mint 21usb and started fresh. Now ive got 50min more for the backup to finish transferring.
The day was not a total loss. i got to vent frustration and give a physics dimension to the kids.
it involved a 30gl barrel of slime at 25psi and a 2bore. :D

Why?
It would not boot without using the usb ?

If this were my PC I would be doing a Fresh Install

But before you do, try and figure out where you are going wrong. There must be some part of the procedure that you are not doing correctly.

@Brickwizard has a typed out blurb which is not too bad to follow. If he would be so kind as to reproduce it here, that is something you could follow.

OOPS

morning Brian
the installation guide is for beginners, I think HB is past that stage

@Hillbilly H In your position [if you have the time] I would be inclined to save every file and folder I needed to keep, to an external storage device, wipe, re-format the drive and re-install, it will be a pain in the butt but probably quicker and more effective than sodding around trying to save the current installation.
You also mentioned a problem with the ram, did you manage to fix it?

i did a wipe, reformatted a different drive and installed mint 21 yesterday. Transferred my backup last night. Now i need to use my dock and try and retrieve stuff that did not get in the backup. E.G. audio files i was working on.
try and figure out where you are going wrong
i think its many things. All the addons, programs... for the school was looked at and tested by me. i think when the programs...where removed some may have left ( bits and pieces ).
(Time shift) Way to many!
You also mentioned a problem with the ram, did you manage to fix it?
LOL Yep got a refund. The seller told me to download HIS program so HE can diagnose the problem. i responded with "i use Linux and your program will not work with my distro"
a few hrs later i had a refund. :)

P.S. My computer is way faster.
P.S.S. Do not worry me no teach spelling,grammar....
