I'm pretty old, though not as old as some folks here. I also have used networked computers from long before the 'web' was worldwide.
Firefox now shows ads as sponsored address bar suggestions.

I agree. I block ads while browsing, etc., but will visit sites I like anonymously on an erratic basis and even click a few things to support them. I also always make sure to bookmark their reflinks to products I like so they get a little % if I order whatever it happens to be.

I'd say that I block ads on 99% of the sites I regularly visit. The list of sites where they're not blocked is pretty small.
Actually, know that I think of it, it's probably closer to 90%, as ads are allowed on about a dozen sites and I don't regularly visit all that many sites. I visit many, just not 'regularly'.
