finding non-html strings

I want to find a program that does more or less what grep does, but with non-html files (odt, doc etc.).
A command line approach (bash) would be fine, or I would even buy a program that would do this.

Yes, DocFetcher was the first one listed at alternativeto.net that Brian linked to.

In the 90s, we used to have what were called "Text Retrieval" programs that could act as an umbrella over your system. Lawyers used them to pull together arguments they needed to sum up before a judge and jury.

I could make use of something like this, myself.
