every linux distro i try reads my i3 as having 8 cores, not a major issue just confused

If you use lscpu then you can see how many cores and how many threads your cpu actually has.

Older CPUs would may have four cores and four threads, which means one logical core for each physical core. Having more threads nets a direct performance increase, but so does having more cores.
