Duel Install Mint on Windows 7 partitioned drive

maybe somebody could send you out a disc if its possible to post to where you are ?

should that not be : sudo fdisk -l

where letter behind the - is a small L
Yes it should be sudo fdisk -l (small letter L)

I asked OP to run that cmd in a previous post from the Live Linux Mint usb.

Hello Everyone, I tried to delete Kubuntu from my other jump drive on my friends window 10 and although it said it was deleted...it was not....Help!

"Format" the USB 'jump drive'. That will have the effect of erasing whatever is on the drive. Usually format to "FAT 32" file system.
I don't use Windows 10 but in all other versions of Windows you would insert the drive, wait for Windows to recognize it, then *right* click on the drive icon or menu item which should be listed under 'Computer' in the file browser. From the right click context menu select 'Format'.
Be very careful and SURE you format the correct drive! :)

Thanks everyone. So I have the list of drives. When I find the one I want to wipe, then what do I do.

Ok Vrai, I can walk it back to my friends 'puter if I have to, yet it is back in mine and I'm in terminal, with yet another opportunity to learn...so from terminal when I find it, how would I wipe or reformat?

Ok, just found another cool Linux program in Mint USB Stick Formatter. Voila!!! Poof...Clean Jump. Yay. Now I'll download Grub on that and put it...Where? And should I get grub from Sourrceforge. Sorry to be illiterate, but how do I get it to download to the jump. This jumping cursor issue, which inspired this move to Linux at this time, is still plaguing me in Mint Live. Any clue for that?

I have both super grub2 hybrid 204s.iso and boot repair-disk-64bit.iso. Are these correct and now what do I do? Maybe copy grub to 1st partition labeled 'sys'? Or use boot repair somehow and then get grub where it belongs. Or just reinstall Mint?

I think it may be easier for you to use the boot-repair-disk. Flash it to the USB stick (needs to be flashed as a 'bootable' image just like you did with the Mint), put it in the computer you are trying to fix, and start or re-start the computer. It 'should' start and boot from the image flashed to the USB. From there just follow the directions :)
If you want to 'get your "geek" on' and get 'jiggy with it' - you could try installing Grub2 from the terminal. Perhaps try the easier steps first?

1. is windows 7 working?

2. what is the brand model number on the fujitsu, it will be on the unit somewhere. it could start with an e or an s eg - lifebook s7020, lifebook e8420 ?

3. are we working on the fujitsu or the dell?

cheers

Hello Wizard. Hope this question wasn't hanging too long. My Computer is a Fujitsu Lifebook AH532 Notebook with Windows 7 Home Premium. Definitely using the Fujitsu with the Dell being a potential clean Linux install later. When that happens on the Dell, which OS would you recommend.

I tried again. First just as I always have just to take notes to give you specifics:
Select 'Install Mint' on desktop of Mint Live usb.
The Installing prog has 'Install as Superuser at top
Welcome screen: Select language
select: 'don't connect on line.
select: Do not install 3rd party software.
Message: Forced UEFI : 'machines firmware has started installer in UEFI mode, but it looks like other OS using BIOS. If you continue you may have difficulty'
The guidance was to select UEFI [otherwise your choice is to quit installation.
Select: 'Something else' rather than to install over whole disk wiping out windows.
This gives you the partition window from the screen shoot.
I tried to install without any changes. In the window at the bottom which asks where you want the boot loader to go I tried sda3 first as usual, then I thought I'd give sda1 a try. All give the message 'no root files defined' 'Please correct from partitioning menu'
Then I tried making sda1 the /boot and sda3 /home for the first time with sda1 selected at the bottom as the place to install boot loader...same message. What's next? At least windows is not crashing. Also I did not see the window attempting to install as I did yesterday...mmmm.

the interesting thing at first site is the mention of firmware + UEFI ; have you gone into BIOS and looked to see what settings are there ?

Yes. There isn't much there. Temperature boot order. The only reference is to BIOS. I'll check again, what are you looking for. Whoever was giving me install guidance said just click install UEFI and then select 'something else' option.

still on 3 cyclinders ..plus we really need some Mint experts here ; i'm not one :^(

looking at your screen shot /home went to /dev/sda3 and if Mint , needs another partition for main install there isn't one . when you go into /boot on /dev/sad1 what do you see inside ?

I do understand and appreciate your assistance. Interesting...I don't know how to see any new posts on conversations without going to my email and downloading the email and then pushing the 'follow thread' button. It is annoying...flopping around in the dark. I guess we just let it stew and something will bubble up. How do we call in the rest of the pack? Or do they all see everything and comment as they have ideas? I'll be glad to research, any aiming assistance there would be appreciated. I am very grateful for your help. Take care of yourself...stress is not good, and you're evidently under a lot. I'lll get off line again and check the BIOS in windows.

When that happens on the Dell, which OS would you recommend.

let's cross that bridge when we come to it.

1. with the dialup, is it an internal modem, or is it an external modem, and if the latter can you give us a brand name and model number?

2. do not under any circumstances delete that first partition - it likely contains windows system files.

3. installation of grub will be performed as a part of the installation of linux distro - you can't just install it onto a partition without a proper environment

cheers

wiz
