Drives are kinda not showing up.

dmesg shows ata devices existing, but I do not see any /dev/sd devices being made. What am I missing?

lsblk

Perhaps you could show the output of:

dmesg |grep -i -e ata -e sd

This should show what the kernel has seen in relation to scsi disks. There will be other stuff as well which can be ignored. If you put the output in code tags here it should be easy to pick through.
