hi there
i have a Chromebook with Linux installed on it and it worked great until i updated
now every time i try to use " sudo apt install {insert packedge here}" it says
dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
unknown group 'smmsp' in statoverride file

Help plz

ok i tryed editing the statoverride file but it said permission denied

it said it was from something called sendmail (smmsp) so i tryed removing it through mousepad, it didn't work, so i tryed using the terminal with all the remove commands i know and it did not work

G'day @natagator and welcome to linux.org :)

Did you use sudo in front of all the commands you issued at Terminal, and/or did you open Mousepad as Administrator?

Cheers

In some cases the temporary Administrator privileges are not enough and he may have to do it with
Code:
sudo su

because i am on Chromebook Linux i cant open the file from the terminal

ok i really need help with this soon or im uninstalling linux

What said that, Mate?

Was it an error on Terminal, or if not, where?

Regret I know nothing about Chromebooks.

Can you give us the output, from Terminal of

Code:
hostnamectl

#and, (this is a comment)

echo $DESKTOP_SESSION

?

Thanks

Wizard

sorry i took so long to reply, we had a power cut.
ok here it is

for hostnamectl

Static hostname: n/a
Transient hostname: localhost
icon name: computer-desktop
chassis: desktop
machine ID: 5e15ae70ac40462ab8aa56f9a31b5ee
boot ID: 272eee3a2f57422dabfb5992331b55f3
operating system: ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS
kernel: Linux 3.18.0-19030-g15d00031737b

and the other

xfce

which is funny because the command i have to run to duel boot linux is
sudo startxfce4

i fixed my file system so i can accesses the files i need from the terminal i just dont know how to open files as administrator

ok so i fixed it but i had to use some wacky command that i used in my desperate attempt to open the file
sudo mousepad /var/lib/dpkg/statoverride
then boom it worked
i dont know if i should have tried this earlier but i am happy that it is done so thanks for all the help

Mate, if you got a good outcome, we are happy for you :)

Keep us posted, if you need help.
