How many disks have you got on your desktop and in what configuration? RAID?

sdf suggests a,b,c,d.e and then f.

Your HDD may have died altogether...

Does the HDD just appear in your File Manager?

I am accessing it through a docking station, the HDD does appear in my file manager but when I try to access it I get the above error message.

G'day Steve and welcome to linux.org :)

What Distro and what version were you using on the laptop, and what about the desktop?

Cheers

I'm not saying that this is the reason 100% but in my experience not being able to mount a device is almost always caused by wrong mounting option is /etc/fstab. Open that file (NOT in sudo mode) and paste its contents here using a
Code:
tag, so that we can see it.
